Smiling Trees

The other day in class, the kids and I drew trees with crayons and then glued googol-eyes to the green part of the trees. As I was letting the students pick out a couple of foam leaf stickers to stick to the branches of their trees, Robert pulled out a small, foam horseshoe and told me that he wanted it instead of a foam leaf. When I asked him why he wanted a horseshoe instead of a leaf, he said, “No, Ms. Amy, it not a horse! It’s smile!”, then stuck it beneath the pair of googol-eyes he’d just glued down and looked up at me and grinned. It was one of the cutest things I’ve ever heard and seen. Kids have some of the greatest perspectives. I wish I saw everything bit more like they do.
